Network and email issues

Next, I realized that my internet speed was very slow at home. I have a cable modem high speed internet account with Road Runner and also got the 10MB speed plan, so I should get close to 10MB down and 1MB up. After performing a speed test I found I was only getting from 200KB-600KB, which is obviously really bad. I submitted an online support ticket, but never did hear back. So I decided to do my own testing. I started to shut off my home computers/servers one at a time to make sure it wasn’t something on my home network causing the issue. I sthudown my backup server, ran another test, nope, that wasn’t it. I shutdown my exchange server, nope that wasn’t it. I shutdown my AD controller (sisko) and sure enough my speeds returned to normal. Sisko must have had some kind of issue that was causing severe network problems and slowing down my internet access speeds. I’m not sure if it was sending out data or receiving data, but it was flooding my network. I rebooted the server, disabled unneeded services, ran windows update, and checked for spyware/adware and found no problems. I assume its a symptom of a software issue in Windows that went haywire, or possibly the initial signs of a bad NIC or one thats on its way out. At least I know where to start looking now if it ever happens again.

So now both of my issues are resolved. I did make a few changes though, I implimented a secondary DNS service with rollernet for shorehost.com. I also got a new no-ip mail reflector account that does the same thing as rollernet, but it costs $$. I added this service to shorehost.com and churchgang.us. This should prevent any further loss of mail or service interruption in the future. I now have 4 backup MX records in my DNS zones for both domains, and this should provide way more redundancy than I really need. ]]>

Pre-insurance inspection

I got a letter in the mail on Firday (after List left for the weekend) that I needed to get a pre-insurance inspection for my Miata. The letter said they would drop comprehensive coverage on my car if I didn’t get the inspection done by today (8-21). I went today at lunch time to get the inspection done and when I got there the guy had me fill out a form with my vehicle info on it, once complete, he checked off a few other things I missed, and then handed me a copy and said “Your all done”. So that whole thing was just a big kick back waste of time. Oh well, at least its done and I shouldn’t have any more red tape to go through to continue enjoying my Miata!

List of things for my Miata

Already done:

1. Changed oil and added good synthetic 0W-30 oil. Also used a good performance oil filter.
2. Changed air filter, nothing fancy yet, just a regular STP filter.
3. Purchased replacement top latches (mine were wearing and the passenger side would not latch properly).
4. Replaced factory spark plugs with high end Denso Irridium spark plugs. This eliminated a low idle condition the car previously had. Also get better response from the engine.

Wants for the future:

1. New tires – must do this soon, rear passenger tire is balding. Want to get Goodyear Eagle F1 tires.
2. Performance intake, probably K&N cold air intake.
3. Replace head gasket, there is a small leak and the gasket just needs to be replaced.
4. Spoiler – I just like the look better with a spoiler than without. This will take a while, as I have to find one I like, have it painted, then mounted.
5. Seat replacement – the drivers seat has some cracking of the leather and the passenger seat has a little as well. Would like to replace the seats at some point.
6. New Top – My top is ok, but within a year or two, I’m going to need to replace it with a new top.
7. Detailing – at some point in the near future, I’d like to have the car detailed, to really clean up the inside.
8. Touch-up paint job. Eventually it might be nice to get a touch-up paint job. Its a 7 year old car, so its not going to be perfect.]]>

Weekend fun

Liz will be away at a MOPS retreat this weekend, from Friday evening to Saturday evening. During this time, I will have all three kids to myself. The plan is for Friday night to have a sleepover in the living room, for the girls and myself that is, Michael will still be in his own room. We’re going to have popcorn and watch a movie and then all of us crash in the living room and sleep there together. It should be fun and I’ll get to catch up on lost time with the girls, since we’ve been so busy the last few weeks. I am not sure what we will do on Saturday yet, but I’m sure we can think up something. Its just a shame we can’t all 4 of us fit in the Miata!!!

Picture Gallery Update

Ok, I know its been a while, but I still don’t have all the pictures uploaded to the net picture gallery yet. I’ve been working on it, but we have so many pictures, it just takes a long time to get them all sorted and uploaded. I got all of 2002, 2003 and 2004 done. I still have 2005 and 2006 to go. The bad news is that we have the most pictures from 2005 and 2006 than any other year, so its going to be a while before the gallery is completely done. I’ve updated the link on our website http://www.churchgang.us to go to the new gallery, so your welcome to check out the older pics, but it will still be some time before the new ones are uploaded.

Fun driving

I am having so much fun driving my new car! I’ve never had a roadster before and this little Miata is amazing. It corners great, handles well and even with my bad back tire, still makes much better contact with the road than my truck did in rainy conditions. Last night I went to Autozone to get some stuff and came out and it was pouring. Good thing I put the top up! I’ll be putting in some Iridium plugs this afternoon and changing the oil to a nice synthetic 0W-30 tonight. This should be a nice combination for my little car! I’m thinking about adding a K&N Cold Air intake to my engine and replacing the standard intake/air filter system. I also need to replace the head gasket soon. This is great fun, its been several years since I’ve done my own car maintenance, but I’m enjoying it!

Car Pickup

I got it, I bought the Miata. I should be able to pick it up today. I am so excited, I can’t wait to go get it. I might have to take the “long” way home tonight… 😉

My potential Miata

I think I have found the Miata I want to get. Its a little higher mileage than I wanted, but its in good shape, runs great, drives great, and is the perfect commute vehicle for me. Check it out – http://xat-racing.ebizautos.com/detail.aspx?iid=1089532&anchor=/1999/Mazda/MX-5-Miata/Convertible/

Picture Gallery Progress

I know its been a few days, and my picture gallery is still down. I took a break last night and did not work on it at all. Its tedious work to sort through 18 thousand pictures and pick out which ones to use and which ones not to use. Then I have to upload them and make sure everything looks right. I have made some progress though, I’ve gotten years 2002 and 2003 completely done. I’ll be starting on 2004 either tonight or tomorrow night. Definately hoping to finish by the weekend.

A Miata for me!

1. Has to fit in my garage (to prevent theft or vandalism)
2. Had to be more economical than my truck

Those two items limit my selection to just a few types or models of cars. After some searching and research on the few models I had to choose from, the Miata stands out. Its a fun little car, peppy and loads of personality. Plus its much better on gas than my truck. So it meets both of my selection criteria. Then I had to talk Liz into it. It was hard work, laboring in hours of discussion over it. 😉 ha ha, NOT! Liz loved the idea, she practically mandated that the next car I get must be a manual. She likes the miata anyway and loves that its a manual. So looks like I’ll be hunting for just the right Miata once my truck sells. Hopefully it will sell fast. Otherwise I’ll have to get a miata from a dealer and trade in my truck for even less $$ :-(]]>
